Queen of the Free and the Cheap

Well, as of late, I have been trying to manage the family finances with a little more wisdom.  I had a combination of a moment of clarity and a new expanse of opportunity.  I had all of these free and very cheap things to do at my constant disposal.  Its great, if not tiring.  But let's face it, the kids either make me tired by entertaining and cleaning up at home after them or by chasing them around places with dinosaur replicas, dump trucks, and inflatable slides.  I've learned to arm myself at all times with snacks, water, and a couple extra diapers for the youngest (she knows when I forget them, I'm convinced).  And off we go.  I've met some wonderful women who are so kind to share their knowledge of the area and all the activities and then am actually paying attention to "social media".  I still don't have a smart phone.  One step at a time.  Anyway, with such little people it didn't make sense to set their standards for entertainment on the weekend and weekdays for that matter, to $20 a ticket sort of places.  While I indulged in a zoo membership, everything must be free or cheap.  What is cheap.  Well my splurge would be $15 for the whole family.  So pretty much the free circuit is what we're hitting.  As it turns out there are a lot of free things here including the dinosaur exhibit that met up with our passing Aunt Rachael at and a Crayola store that lets them use their sidewalk chalk and crayons and paper (not mine.)  There are entire convention centers filled with giant trucks for the express purpose of pleasing the young (and let's admit, all the dads too) for the mere entry fee of donated non-perishables for the local food bank.  So, bring it on.  I'll save the expensive stuff for when they'll remember I've just spent this much and we're not leaving until we get our money's worth speech.  Right now, I wouldn't get much more then a blank stare and a bored attempted cartwheel in a highly inappropriate place where we'd take out about 3 adults walking by.

My kid's a random red head who thought to jump in when I said smile.
What's cuter than two kids on a tiny triceratops.

Always praying in these digging situations that my daughter doesn't unearth something disgusting.

Finally, someone is letting me write on the walls

He just sits on this a little too naturally.  I had to lay down some rules.

Father's Day Weekend 2012

On the Friday of Father's Day weekend we had a neighborhood fishing derby.  Hayden was technically the entry in the 3-5 year old category.  He brought home, with the help of Dad and some wriggly worms, three catfish, 9 inches each.  However the winner doubled our number exactly.  Guess next year we'll have the next hook baited and ready to go so there's no lag time.  I can't help but be competitive.  Anyway, one of the catches happened to be my foot, though I'm thankful it was mine and not someone else's.  Apparently we had a faulty reel on that fishing pole.  Ummhmmmm.  Anyway, I'm tetanus free as far as I know still.  Super cute pics of my kiddos though.  I guess that's the risk of being the photographer.

Three cuties in orange, ready to go!

How many tackle boxes do you need to win a fishing derby, more than two I guess.

This is what happens when you tell a 3 year old to smile.

Sittin' pretty

Here we make a visit to Bass Pro Shop after church on Father's Day.  The kids enjoy taking in the animals, in live or taxidermied form.   I had to dig Dad out of the aisles eventually.  Afterall, some people do actually have to eat.

Celebrating Dad and Grandpa

A week before the actual Father's day, which I did catch little flack for, we went to Grandpa and Grandma's to celebrate Grandpa.  We made homemade ice cream and Hayden, bless his heart was so eager to help even though he couldn't partake (he was pumped about the the awaiting popcicle).  Cousins came too and we got a good bounce on the trampoline.  We left with fully tummies and had a relaxing day just hanging out with the big guy that draws squeals of pleasure at the mention of his name.  Who doesn't love Grandpa.

A Children's Museum...via Groupon

Groupon is great and is nicely facilitating getting to try some new things in our new city and this children's museum was one of them.  We got to explore gravity, farm to market, get to be the doctor for once, got to build (and I believe that was Daddy's favorite) and then played with water.  The kids loved it and Dad was happy he got to go on this excursion too, though I'm pretty sure it was because he was playing the whole time.

Spicing up the Weekends

We are wild and crazy.  We often start out with a giant To-do list on the Friday night and just start chipping away at it through the weekend.  It never seemed to get done and we couldn't ever fit in sightseeing around our new city.  So as COO for our family, I realized I had been falling down on my job as VP of Family Extracurricular.  I rocked it during the week when Daddy was at work, but he was missing all of the fun. So I hustled the family out of the door by 9am on Saturday (a feat if you are familiar with our weekend speeds).  We were able to hit the Home Depot free Saturday workshop for kids and build a little project for each of them (minus painting the thing because we didn't have time to wait for it to dry).  And then it was off to a neighboring suburb's festival.  Each suburb around us has their own.  We'll be sampling them all.  But alas, work doesn't do itself.  But at least the kids want to hang out with us while we do it, and sometimes it creates sweet pictures.  More coming next weekend!
